Lyrics to Zebra

“Zebra” by the John Butler Trio

I can be loud man, I can be silent

I could be young man or I could be old.

I can be a gentleman, I can be violent.

I could turn hot man or I can be cold

. I could be just like the calm before the storm both, Waiting for all of it yeah to break loose.

I could be innocent or I could be guilty Doesn’t mean that I don’t believe in no noose
So I’m singin’

I could be rich like a wandering Gypsy

I could be poor like a fat wallet lost.

I could be first man or I could come last

It’s not who breaks the ribbon boy it’s how you get across.

I could be red blue black and white sunset

Or darkest at day boy or brightest at night

I could be the sun man I could be the moon

I’m made up from the stars boy I shining so bright.
So I’m singin’
I could be asleep boy, or I could be awake

I can be alive and a be the walking dead

I can be ignorant, or I could be informed (Yes sir)

I could lead my life man or I could be led (That’s right)

I can be anything I put my mind to boy All I gotta do is give myself half a chance

I can bring love back into my life

And share it with the world if I got some balance
So I’m singin’

3. Make a blog comment and respond to these three points: – What do you notice about each line of the lyrics? What do you think the song is trying to tell people? – The video does not have a lot of colour in it. It also has a lot of close up pictures of the John Butler Trio. How do they look as they sing? What emotions are they feeling? – Write your own verse of the song using the same pattern of words that they have used.

THE GREEN STREET MURAL
In many laneways in Melbourne you can see some street art, this mural is painted in Green street in Richmond.
Street Art is when an artist develops his or her art in a public place, sometimes this is commissioned by then owner of the building .
Below is a link to a street art mural on the wall of Dimmey’s store in Richmond, that depicts the history of Melbourne / Richmond / Australia from the opening of Dimmey’s to the modern day.
Have a look at this mural which was painted by Haydan Dewar, and see how many Australian characters, moments from history and icons you can find.
Did you see the Eureka Tower ?
Can you find some truly Australian foods that you might have for breakfast?

I think it means to respect Australia
because there are Australians in it. I liked the part where there were people from different countries.

  4. The thing behind this song is whereever you were born in Australia we are all as one and we will share a dream together!
The lyrics that really spoke to me said it doesn’t matter if you came from a diffrent country and you come and live in Australia you are always welcome. I do think that this aplies to all Australian because we are all together as one and we support each othe and encourage each other!

  6. Dear Mrs Cosgrave,
I loved that song! I noticed that most of the lines he was saying he could be somthing but he could also be the opposite too. I think the song is trying to tell us that you can be anything you want.

  7. Dear Mrs Cosgrave,
I think the song is about Australian people and the way we act.I think this was done a long time ago because its in black and white,I have heard this song a lot of times on rage.Something I notice was that some verses rhymed. I also think the song is trying to say were a bit odd and that were different then any other country. They looked a bit sad and they also looked happy at times. This is one of my favourite songs.

  9. Dear Mrs. Cosgrave,
I heard the music. They are like opposite words like what John Butler Trio was singing. He is saying what he can do and the opposite of what he can do. I see that there is not much colours.

  10. Hello Mrs Cosgrave,
I noticed that the lyrics were different.
I think they are trying to tell us about Australia.
I think they are calm, sad and he can be what he wants to be.
I could be sad I could be happy,
I could be bad I could be awsome.

  11. Dear Mrs Cosgrave,
    I really like that song!
I noticed that the words where different, but at first I thought they repeated the words over and over again.
    They look like cool people.

  12. Hello Mrs. Cosgrave
I noticed that all the lyrics meant he could be something and something else.
I think they are trying to tell us about how we can be anything ,we just have to believe.
I think their emotions are all feeling different at diffrent times of the song.
    My verse is…
I could be kind I could be mad
I could be crazy I could be sad.

  14. Hello Mrs. Cosgrave,
I really loved the song, I’m just not so sure of the dreadlocks though… anyway let’s get down to business. I say that the song was trying to tell you that he could be very bad but he could also be very nice, and that he could be the worst of the good. The lines were similar because he was just saying what he could be,

    I CAN BE A NIGHTMARE
OR I CAN BE A SWEAT DREAM
    I CAN BE BITTER
    OR I CAN BE SUGAR!

    from Alex 😀

  15. Dear Mrs Cosgrave,
I think this song is saying that you can be anything you want,
the thing that I noticed about some of the lyrics was that he was saying that he could be something and then he was saying that he could be the opposite as well. I think that it was a great song!

  16. Dear Mrs Cosgrave,
I loved that song. It sounds really familiar to me. Last night I heard it on the radio!
-I noticed that in each line he said something that he can be and the opposite of that,
-The message behind the song is that you can be anything you want as long as it’s right.
-They look like they badly want something when they sing

I CAN BE SOUR AND I CAN BE SWEET
I CAN BE A CHASER OR I CAN BE ON RUN
I CAN BE A GOODY OR I CAN BE A BAD GUY
I CAN BE BORING OR I CAN BE SO FUN
I CAN BE HEALTHY OR I CAN BE SICK
I CAN BE YOUR HAPPY OR I CAN BE YOUR SAD
I COULD BE THE ONE WHO’S HAIR GOES FLICK
    SO IM SINGING
